Want to Add Fuel Filtration Capabilities to Your Fueling System? Then You Probably Need an Adapter

Not all fuel dispensing equipment comes standard with a fuel dispenser filter, but that does not diminish the need to keep the fuel running through the dispensing system clean. In some non-retail applications, such as farm tanks, it may be necessary for operators to install an adapter to accommodate a dispenser filter. Here’s how to select the right adapter for your application.

1. Determine the size and standard of the inlet and outlet threads as well as the size and specification of the filter mounting stud threads.

PetroClear adapters are available in inlet and outlet diameters ranging from ¾ inch to 2 inches for most National Pipe Taper (NPT) and British Standard Pipe (BSP) thread styles.

All PetroClear adapters feature Unified Fine Pitch (UNF) filter mounting threads, and are available in the following thread sizes and styles:

  • 1 inch major diameter and 12 threads per inch (1-12 UNF)
  • 1 ⅜ inches major diameter and 12 threads per inch (1.375-12 UNF)
  • 1 ½ inches major diameter with 16 threads per inch (1.5-16 UNF)

2. Determine the flow rate that the adapter and spin-on fuel filter will need to sustain.

PetroClear adapters are available in configurations that can accommodate ¾-inch or 1-inch flow rates.

3. Determine the type of material the adapter should be constructed of in order to provide reliable service.

Aluminum and cast-iron adapters are available from PetroClear. Typically, aluminum adapters are used for gasoline due to its non-sparking properties. PetroClear aluminum heads are impregnated with epoxy to fill any potential voids created during the casting process. Cast iron is more prevalent in diesel applications and situations where there is extended piping that requires a more durable material to handle the load being placed on the adapter.
